CONNEAUT, Ohio—
An Ashtabula County man is charged with driving a mini-bike while drunk and holding a toddler in front of him.Police say, 31-year-old Scott Mull pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning in Conneaut Municipal Court to several charges, including driving under the influence, operating an unsafe vehicle, child endangering and possession of marijuana.
At around 6:00 p.m. Friday, police were investigating an accident on Jackson Street in Conneaut. Officers say that's when Mull, whizzed by on this mini-bike, with his three year old niece seated in front of him.
"It's a regular minibike, a yellow one, but he had her like on his lap toward the handlebars, so it wasn't like safe," said Ryan Belcher, who saw officers pull over Mull.
"She was right on front, he was holding her with one hand, just riding down the road because he's always riding up and down the road," said Carletta McCumber, who also witnessed the arrest.
Police say the girl was not wearing a helmet. They say Mull smelled like alcohol and admitted that he had six beers and didn't have a license. They say when they tested him, his blood alcohol level was more than point-14, nearly twice the legal limit.
"He couldn't barely stand over there," said McCumber.
Police say while they were giving Mull a field sobriety test, they also discovered that he had a small amount of marijuana.
The child's mother was contacted, and she came to the scene to pick up the girl. Mull was arrested and later released.
No one opened the door when we went to his home.
City prosecutors say more charges could be filed at a later date. Mull is scheduled to appear in court again on May 24.
